FlightMap

FlightMap allows users to monitor the status and location of aircraft.  Four main user interface components are used: Map, Position Log, Flight Bar and Reports.

Map
The map area of FlightMap shows the position of each aircraft as an icon overlaid onto a map, which is typically a Street Level Map (SLM).  Street Level Mapping allows users to search locations by street address, latitude/longitude, zip or postal code and telephone number.  SLM facilitates navigation through urban settings.

The user may use the zoom function to view a particular area containing aircraft of interest.  Furthermore, the aircraft icons are color coded to give an immediate indication of status.  A large collection of powerful tools is available to the user, including:

  • A “Follow Me” function that notifies the user when a new position report for a selected aircraft is received
  • A Search function for addresses and coordinates
  • A function to calculate Estimated Time of Arrival (ETA)
  • An ability to identify when an aircraft is “on Mission” (e.g. patient loaded)
  • A function, called SkyMail, to send and receive text messages
  • A function to displays aircraft flight paths

Flight Bar
The Flight Bar works in conjunction with the map.  It displays a list of aircraft (call signs) and a list of flights for those aircraft.  Clicking on the boxes in the list of aircraft (call signs) determines which aircraft will be viewed.  Clicking on the boxes in list of flights (for the selected aircraft) determines which flights are available for viewing.  The information in the Flight Bar is current as of the last position report received.  The Flight Bar provides color coded indication of status events which are configurable by the user.

Position Log
The Position Log provides a complete list of all position reports received.  Each row in the Log represents one position report.  Color coding is used to indicate status events, which allows users to quickly identify:

  • The beginning and end of the flight (main power on/main power off)
  • The beginning and end of “air time” (skids or wheels off/ skids or wheels on)
  • The beginning and end of the “mission” (mission switch on/ mission switch off)
  • The beginning and end of a satellite voice call
  • The occurrence of an emergency (Mayday) situation

Reports
FlightMap includes a built in report generator that allows users to generate reports of flying activity such as number of flights taken, flight duration, flight distance and location.  Users can easily configure the reports by selecting:

  • Which aircraft (call signs) to include
  • What date range to cover
  • Whether to distinguish flight time, air time and/or mission time
  • Whether to present a summary only or to include detailed position data

These reports provide an excellent mechanism to track flying activity and to generate invoices for flying done on behalf of clients.
